Work-life balance for talent retention

The balance between work, personal life and family is an essential aspect of our lives, which can positively impact our well-being and productivity. Balancing work responsibilities with personal and family obligations can be a challenge, especially in today's demanding work environment. However, organizations that prioritize the work-life balance of their employees can reap significant benefits in terms of retention and overall company performance.

In 2016, the portuguese standard NP 4552 was published with the aim of improving work-life balance and promoting gender equality in the workplace. This standard establishes a framework for organizations to implement a work life balance system that considers the personal and family needs of employees, while promoting gender equality.

But why is work-life balance so important when it comes to employee retention?

  1. Helps to keep employees motivated and reduce the risk of burnout.
  2. Shows that the company values its employees and can help build loyalty, convey to employees that they are more than a cog in a machine, and recognize the importance of their personal lives.
  3. Attracts talent, since nowadays and especially after covid, the balance between work and personal life is a priority for many workers looking for a job, which becomes a great competitive advantage for organizations.

In our company, we have seen several successful examples of organizations that have implemented these reconciliation measures in order to improve the balance between work and personal life, such as:

  1. Set clear expectations: a good definition of working hours and the encouragement of employees to take breaks and days off when necessary.
  2. Offer flexibility: making flexible hours a possibility, as well as remote work and time for personal matters.
  3. Lead by example: managers' prioritization of work-life balance sends a message to employees that it's important.

In conclusion, by implementing these measures through NP 4552, organizations improved happiness and job satisfaction thus verifying a increase in employee productivity and, more importantly, talent retention.

Improving retention rates has many benefits for organizations including reduced recruitment and training costs, increased productivity and a positive work environment. Organizations need to take work-life balance seriously and make it an integral part of their company culture.
